An ancient varietal, Lagrein is found mostly in the Alto-Adige region of Italy, with newer plantings in the cooler regions of south-eastern states in Australia. Tasting of lean black fruit, and earthy pepper or spice notes with notably high acidity and high tannin, this harder-to-find grape is similar in style to French Syrah or Italian Chianti (Sangiovese). It tends to age well because of high tannin and acidity; but also pairs well with food.
