Mencía is a high-yielding, red grape variety known for producing medium-bodied wines with notes of dark fruit, cherries, violets, and damp earth. Originally from Spain, the grape is now planted across Portugal and the United States, though it’s best known for its presence in Bierzo, Ribeira Sacra, and Monterrei. Mencía grows best in schist soils and yields wines with fresh acidity and soft tannins.
