Native to the Medoc area of France, Carménère is a red grape variety that produces deep-hued wines known for flavors of raspberry and green pepper. The grape is often vinified with other Bordeaux varieties, although on its own it has found much success in Chile’s Central Valley. Carménère-based wines are often compared to Merlot, as their fleshy palates and flavors are quite similar. The grape has also found international success in northern Italy, Walla Walla, and California.
