Arneis is a white grape variety originating from Roero in Piedmont, north-western Italy. As winemakers stopped using it to soften Nebbiolo in Barolo, it almost disappeared in the 1970s but has since enjoyed a revival, making soft, round wines that retain acidity on chalk soils. It is increasingly grown in the Napa Valley, Willamette Valley and Mendocino.
