Montepulciano is a popular red wine grape cultivated in the Abruzzo region of Italy (not to be confused with the Tuscan town of Montepulciano, where wines are crafted from Sangiovese). The Montepulciano grape creates dry red wines with soft tannins and are mostly consumed in their youth. Wines labelled Montepulciano d’Abruzzo may contain up to 15% of Sangiovese in the blend. Montepulciano is the backbone to the region’s dark-hued rosés, known as Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo.
