Who’s it for: Gamay geeks. This elegant, fruit-driven expression of Gamay Noir comes from the village of Morgon in Beaujolais, more specifically the “Corcelette” vineyard therein. If you’re not super familiar with Gamay’s joys, think of it as a slightly earthier, more wild expression of Pinot Noir, and consider taking this bottle on a test drive at your next dinner party; it’s a crowd-pleaser.

1995 Château Sociando-Mallet Cuvée Jean Gautreau, $150
Who’s it for: Anyone who believes in ideal drinking windows. 2019 Leeuwin Estate Prelude Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, $29
Who’s it for: People who are looking for great wine from an underappreciated growing region. In the far western reaches of Australia several hours south of Perth lies the Margaret River and one of the more remarkable wine regions in the world. Surrounded by cold waters from the Antarctic coast and at times buffeted by the Indian Ocean, this region nevertheless produces elegant, balanced, and refined wines like this Cabernet Sauvignon from the long-standing Leeuwin Estate.

2017 Voix de la Vigne Pinot Noir, $19.99
Who’s it for: Those who enjoy an Old World/New World mashup. This wine comes from French winemaker Bruno Corneaux with fruit from Oregon’s Willamette Valley and offers that classic Oregon mix of bright cherry fruit, cola, and hints of dried leaves and tobacco. It’s a restrained wine, but definitely not boring — and it’s a brilliant value.

2019 Clos des Rocs Pouilly-Loché Les Mûres, $42
Who’s it for: White wine aficionados. While the villages to the north in the Côte d’Or might be more famous, many wine drinkers have realized that there are tremendous expressions of Chardonnay to be found in the more southerly Burgundy region of the Mâconnais. While the best of these wines, like this bottle from vigneron Olivier Giroux, aren’t exactly cheap, they’re still affordable — even when pulled from some of the top growing sites in the region.

2020 Château Saint Florin Bordeaux Blanc, $15.99
Who’s it for: Anyone craving the sun. Sauvignon Blanc, which is the basis for this wine along with some Semillon, is a killer spring and early summer variety. This lovely expression from Bordeaux offers more balance and nuance than some of the racier, punchier versions from the Loire Valley or New Zealand.
