Although frequently in the shadows of neighboring Chile and Argentina, Bolivia’s winemaking scene is worth seeking out. Vines are cultivated at high altitudes (up to 9,000 feet), and 75% are red varieties. The country has not become synonymous with a specific grape, though Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Torrontés, and Muscat of Alexandria are widely planted. Most of Bolivia’s vineyards are found in Tarija, located in the southern part of the country.
