Upper Loire

Located west of Paris, the Upper Loire is an unofficial designation for a Loire Valley appellations east of Touraine, namely Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, the Côtes du Forez, Côte Roannaise, Menetou-Salon, Valençay, and Quincy. Here, Sauvignon Blanc and Gamay reign king, with the former thriving in northerly limestone soils and the latter in the sandy, granitic soils of the southern part of the designation. The Upper Loire spans an impressive 120 miles along the upstream stretch of the Loire River.
