Pinot Noir was once one of the most misunderstood grape varieties in the world, pushed to yield high volumes by winemakers who tried to extract too much color and tannin. It then dawned on many in its Burgundy heartland that Pinot Noir might not be capricious but just rather badly treated. So a new style emerged, true to the identity of the grape — wines of softness, succulence, and delicacy. Where Burgundy led, others followed. Here are some of the new classics from the rest of the world.

Simply put, a wine with a 100-point score means that it is “perfect by taste, perfect by structure, the best that you can get,” says sommelier Devin Reed. More of these wines are coming out of California following a string of strong vintages. In fact, more than 50 California wineries were awarded 100 points in 2021, according to Liv-ex. Wines that were released in 2021 from 2016, 2018, and 2019 vintages, in particular, received the highest scores from highly-regarded critics.
