Judgment of Paris 1976 - When California Shook the Wine World
The Pix Team

On May 24th, 1976, Englishman Steven Spurrier and American Patricia Gastaud-Gallagher held a tasting in Paris to highlight the best of California's wines. They presented them blind alongside the best red wines of Bordeaux and the best white wines of Burgundy, inviting a panel of top judges to taste them. The results stunned everyone, not least the organizers, with two Californian wines coming out on top. The winning red was Warren Winiarski's Stag's Leap Wine Cellars 1973, while the winning white, Chateau Montelena's Chardonnay 1973, was only their second vintage of this wine, made from bought-in grapes.
